iCloud Mail is Apple's email service, bundled with every Apple ID and used heavily by consumers on iPhone, iPad and Mac. It carries three generations of Apple domains: the current icloud.com, the older me.com from the MobileMe era, and the original mac.com. All three land on the same Apple infrastructure, and in many cases a single Apple ID owns aliases across all of them. Apple also offers Hide My Email, which generates disposable relay addresses that forward to the real mailbox, and that feature has real consequences for anyone verifying or mailing an Apple audience.

How Apple iCloud Mail Handles Verification
What Apple's MX records look like
Apple hosted mail domains publish MX records pointing at mail.icloud.com, typically mx01.mail.icloud.com and mx02.mail.icloud.com at equal or near equal priority. The same MX set serves icloud.com, me.com and mac.com, which is the clearest confirmation that all three are the same platform wearing different names. Mailthentic identifies Apple hosting from the MX chain, so an alias on the legacy mac.com domain is treated with exactly the same logic as a modern icloud.com address.
How iCloud answers an SMTP probe
iCloud performs recipient validation during the SMTP conversation. When you issue RCPT TO for an address that does not correspond to a real Apple ID alias, Apple responds with a permanent rejection in the 550 family, commonly with wording about an unknown or illegal alias. When the alias does exist, it responds with a 250. That makes iCloud one of the providers where SMTP verification genuinely earns its keep: a mailbox can actually be confirmed, unlike on Google or Microsoft. Mailthentic opens the conversation, issues the recipient command, and stops before DATA, so nothing is ever delivered.
Mailthentic still runs its catch all check by probing the domain with a randomly generated local part. Apple rejects that random address, which confirms that icloud.com is not accept all and that a 250 on a real address means something.
The alias problem
Apple's alias system is worth understanding before you interpret a result. A single Apple ID can own several addresses, spread across icloud.com, me.com and mac.com, and can create additional custom aliases. All of them resolve to the same mailbox. Verification tells you that an alias is valid and routable. It does not tell you which of a person's aliases they actually read, and it cannot tell you that an address you hold is their preferred one.
Hide My Email compounds this. Apple can mint a random looking relay address that forwards to a user's real mailbox. These addresses verify perfectly well, because they are real and they route, but the user can disable the relay at any moment, at which point mail to it stops being delivered. There is no way to distinguish a relay address from an ordinary one at the SMTP layer with any reliability, and Mailthentic does not pretend otherwise.
Rate limiting, deferrals and greylisting
Apple throttles unfamiliar probing IPs. Sustained connections produce temporary responses in the 421, 450 and 451 families, which mean the platform wants the source to slow down and carry no information about the recipient. Mailthentic treats all three as deferrals, backs off, and retries before committing to a verdict, and it paces probes against the Apple MX cluster rather than against the domain name so that a large batch does not arrive as a burst. A deferral is never converted into an invalid verdict, and if an address still cannot be resolved after retries it is reported as unknown.
So what does an iCloud result actually mean?
A 550 that fingerprints as an unknown alias is a definitive answer: that address does not exist and should be removed. A 250 means the alias is real and routable, which is a substantially stronger statement than a 250 from Google or Microsoft. An unknown verdict on iCloud generally means Apple deferred the probe rather than that the address is suspect. What no result on any provider can tell you is whether the human behind a valid address still reads it, and on Apple, where people accumulate aliases across three domains and decades, that gap is wider than usual.

Trust the definitive verdicts
Because iCloud rejects unknown aliases during the conversation, both ends of the verdict scale carry real weight here. An invalid result is a hard answer from Apple and the address should be suppressed permanently. A valid result is a genuine confirmation that the alias exists and routes, and it is worth considerably more than the same verdict on an accept-all provider. Use that confidence, but use it carefully, because existence and attention are different things.
What to do with unknown and risky verdicts
- Unknown or deferred. This almost always means Apple throttled the probe. Re queue the address rather than deleting it, and if it still will not resolve after a later, smaller batch, fall back on how the address was acquired and whether it has ever engaged.
- Risky. Treat role addresses and any contact with prior bounce history as suppression candidates regardless of the SMTP result.
- Relay addresses. If a contact signed up through Sign in with Apple, they may well have given you a Hide My Email relay. Those relays verify as valid and then silently stop working if the user turns them off. Watch for a valid address that suddenly starts hard bouncing and suppress it immediately rather than assuming the verification was wrong.
Protecting deliverability into Apple
Apple's filtering is quieter than Google's or Microsoft's but it is not lenient, and it leans on authentication and reputation:
- Authenticate fully. SPF, DKIM and DMARC on the sending domain are the baseline.
- Warm up new sending IPs and domains gradually. A cold source arriving with a large burst will collect deferrals.
- Respect Mail Privacy Protection when reading your metrics. Apple Mail pre fetches remote images for many users, which inflates open rates and can make a dead list look engaged. Do not use opens as your engagement signal for Apple contacts. Use clicks, replies and purchases instead, because those are the metrics Apple's privacy features do not distort.
- Honour unsubscribes instantly and give recipients an obvious way out so they do not reach for the junk button.
Verify at capture, and again before a large send
Verifying on the signup form catches typos in the moment, which matters on Apple because a mistyped alias produces a clean, immediate rejection you can act on right there. Re verify before large campaigns so that aliases which have since been retired, and relays which have since been disabled, come out of the list before Apple ever sees the mail.
