Namecheap Private Email Email Verification

Private Email is Namecheap's hosted mailbox product, sold alongside domain registration and shared hosting. Because it is bundled with a domain purchase, it is extremely common on the domains of small companies, consultancies, and side projects, and those are exactly the domains that fill B2B prospecting lists. Mailboxes live on the customer's own domain, so the platform is only identifiable from the MX records. Namecheap domains frequently have a catch-all enabled, and on a catch-all domain no individual mailbox can be confirmed over SMTP. Mailthentic probes for that condition on every domain rather than assuming either way.

How Namecheap Private Email Handles Verification

A domain using Namecheap Private Email publishes MX records that point at the Private Email platform, typically mx1.privateemail.com with a companion host. The address itself is on the customer's domain, so there is nothing in the local part or the domain name that identifies Namecheap. The MX lookup is what gives it away, and it is how Mailthentic classifies the domain before the SMTP probe even starts.

How the probe works

Verification opens an SMTP session to the published MX host, greets the server, declares a null sender, and issues RCPT TO for the address being checked. The conversation stops there. Mailthentic never proceeds to DATA, so no message is transmitted and nothing appears in anyone's inbox.

The response depends almost entirely on how the domain owner set the mailbox up:

  • On a domain without a catch-all, an address that does not exist can be rejected with a 550. That is definitive: the mailbox is not there.
  • On a domain with a catch-all, the server answers 250 for every address it is offered, whether or not a mailbox exists behind it.
  • Under load, or when the platform decides a source is probing too quickly, it can defer with 421, 450, or 451. These are temporary conditions and say nothing about the mailbox. Mailthentic retries with a backoff before drawing any conclusion.

Why so many Namecheap domains are accept-all

Private Email is aimed at people who want their domain to just work. A catch-all is an obvious convenience for a one-person business: no message is ever lost to a typo, and everything lands somewhere. Shared hosts and registrar mail products across the board, Namecheap, Hostinger, Bluehost, and cPanel-based hosting generally, ship or encourage this configuration, which is why so many perfectly legitimate small-business domains come back as accept-all. It is not a sign that the list is bad. It is the destination server declining to reveal which of its mailboxes exist.

Catch-all detection, and its consequence

Mailthentic tests the domain with a random address that no real person could have been assigned. If the server accepts that control address, the domain is catch-all. From that moment the probe has hit a wall: the server will accept anything, so no individual mailbox on that domain can be confirmed. Mailthentic reports the address as accept-all rather than valid, because claiming otherwise would be asserting something the evidence does not support.

If the control address is rejected and the target address is accepted, the server is clearly distinguishing between real and invented recipients, and the acceptance is meaningful evidence that the mailbox exists.

Reading the result

A 550 here means the mailbox does not exist and the address belongs in your suppression list. An acceptance on a domain that rejected the random control means the mailbox is real. An acceptance on a catch-all domain means only that the domain accepts mail. Those three outcomes carry very different weight, and collapsing the third into the first is precisely how a list that looks clean on paper produces bounces in production.

Rate limiting is worth a final note. Private Email is a shared platform, so many customer domains sit behind the same infrastructure. Verification traffic aimed at that infrastructure must be paced, and deferrals must be respected, or the platform will simply stop answering and every result turns into an unknown.

Best Practices for Namecheap Private Email

Most addresses on Namecheap Private Email domains are perfectly ordinary business mailboxes. The discipline is in being honest about which of them you have actually proven.

Verify at a sustainable pace

  • Hold per-domain concurrency down. Many customer domains share the same MX cluster, so aggressive probing looks like an attack on the platform and gets you throttled.
  • Respect deferrals. A 421, 450, or 451 is a request to come back later, not a bounce. Let the retry logic run and re-check anything that still has not resolved.
  • Re-verify on a schedule. Small teams change constantly, and mailbox turnover on these domains is high.

What accept-all means for you

Accept-all is not a soft version of invalid. It means the server accepted a random address that cannot exist, so its acceptance of your address proves nothing either way. The mailbox may well be real. SMTP simply cannot say so.

Fall back on evidence outside the protocol:

  • Where the address came from. Something a person typed into your own form is far stronger than something scraped or purchased.
  • Engagement. A past open, click, or reply is better proof of a live mailbox than any probe could ever be.
  • Address shape. Role accounts such as info@, hello@, or billing@ usually exist on a small-business domain but are shared, unevenly monitored, and more likely to attract a spam complaint.
  • Recency. An old, cold record deserves more caution than a recent one.

Send to accept-all addresses in small, isolated batches so you can watch the bounce rate on that cohort alone, and keep them out of large sends until they have proven themselves. Suppress the group outright when its provenance is weak, and drop individual addresses as soon as a hard bounce arrives.

  • Get authentication right. SPF, DKIM, and DMARC alignment matter to the filters in front of this platform, and misalignment is an easy way to be rejected before content is even considered.
  • Wire bounce processing back into suppression automatically. On a catch-all domain the bounce is the only truth that ever surfaces, so it is the most valuable data you will get.
