Temporary failures are not failures
Many mail servers greylist. On first contact from an unfamiliar sender they respond with a 421, 450 or 451, which means come back shortly, not this address does not exist. If a verifier treats that deferral as a failure, perfectly good subscribers get dropped from your list and you never find out. Mailthentic treats greylisting as what it is: a temporary deferral. We retry with a backoff, and the SMTP response code stays visible on the result row so you can see exactly what the server said.
Some addresses cannot be confirmed by anyone
A catch-all domain, also called accept-all, accepts every address you send at it whether the mailbox exists or not. Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 return 250 OK during an SMTP conversation even for addresses that do not exist. On those domains, no verifier on the market can confirm an individual mailbox. Mailthentic reports them as catch-all or unknown, with a confidence score, rather than inflating them into a valid to make the summary look better. It is a less flattering number and a far more useful one.

What that looks like in practice
Send a CSV or use the API. We deduplicate, run syntax, domain and MX checks, screen for disposable domains, flag role based prefixes, detect catch-all behaviour, and probe over SMTP where a meaningful answer is available. Deferrals are retried with a backoff. Results come back as valid, invalid, catch-all, risky or unknown, each with a reason, an SMTP code and a confidence score. You keep control of the middle bands: some teams send to high confidence catch-alls, some do not, and both are legitimate choices once you can actually see which is which.
When another tool may suit you better
If you want a single vendor for sending, automation, landing pages and verification, a focused verifier is not that. Mailthentic does one job. It also will not promise that every address it marks valid will be deliverable forever, because mailboxes get full, disabled and deleted after a verification runs. What is greylisting and why does it matter?
Greylisting is when a mail server temporarily defers an unfamiliar sender with a 421, 450 or 451 response, asking it to come back shortly. It is not a rejection. A verifier that treats it as one will silently remove good addresses from your list. We retry with a backoff instead.
Why do you report catch-all instead of guessing?
Because a catch-all domain accepts every address whether the mailbox exists or not, so no verifier can confirm an individual mailbox there. We report it as catch-all, attach a confidence score, and let you decide your own risk tolerance.
