Mailthentic vs FreshAddress
Self serve email verification with results you can audit, address by address
FreshAddress is a long established name in email data quality, with a track record that goes back a very long way in this market. Teams that work with them know what they are getting. If you are looking for an alternative, it is usually because you want something you can run yourself, inspect yourself, and switch on today.
We will not make claims about their product or their pricing, which you should check on their own site. What follows is a plain description of what Mailthentic does.
What a verifier can honestly prove
There is a ceiling, and every provider shares it. A catch-all domain, also called accept-all, accepts mail for every address at that domain, so no verification service can confirm whether a specific mailbox behind it exists. Gmail and Google Workspace, and Outlook and Microsoft 365, return 250 OK during an SMTP conversation even for addresses that do not exist, so an accepting response from them does not prove a mailbox is real either.
What separates verifiers is not whether they hit that ceiling, because they all do. It is whether they admit it. A tool can label those addresses accurately, or it can quietly count them as valid and hand you a report that reads better than the truth.
What Mailthentic does
We report catch-all and unconfirmable addresses as catch-all or unknown, with a confidence score, so you always know which part of your list is proven and which part is a judgement call.
Every result explains itself. Each row carries the status, the reason behind it, the raw SMTP response code returned by the receiving server, and a confidence score. You can audit any address in the file, which means you can defend the decision you make from it.
The detection stack runs syntax validation, domain and MX record checks, disposable domain detection, catch-all detection, role based flagging for addresses such as info@ and admin@, and risky and invalid classification. Greylisting is treated properly: a 421, 450 or 451 is a temporary deferral, so we retry with a backoff instead of discarding a good contact.
Self serve, and built to fit your stack
Sign up, upload a bulk CSV and have results the same day, with your original columns preserved on export. There is a full API, and CRM integrations for Brevo, HubSpot, Salesforce, Mailchimp and PlusVibe, so you can import a list, verify it, and push the clean results back. We deduplicate before processing, so you pay for unique addresses only. Credits are pay as you go and never expire, or take a monthly plan. Data handling is GDPR aligned, and we never sell, share or reuse your contact data.
What Mailthentic does
Exactly what you get, stated plainly. We do not fill in a column for FreshAddress, because their feature set is theirs to describe and it changes. Check their site and compare for yourself.

Comparing the pricing
Verification pricing changes often, so rather than quote a number that may already be out of date, here are both pricing pages. Check them side by side.
Mailthentic
Pay as you go with credits that never expire, or a monthly plan. Duplicates in your list are removed before processing, so you are not charged for them twice.

Where FreshAddress Excels

-
A broad set of adjacent data services for larger organisations
Is Mailthentic right for you?
Mailthentic suits you if
- You want to start immediately. Sign up, upload a CSV or call the API, and see results without a sales process or a scoping call.
- You want transparency at the row level. Status, reason, SMTP code and confidence score on every address, so nothing has to be taken on faith.
- You mail business domains, where catch-all servers are common, and an honest catch-all label matters more to you than a high valid percentage.
- Your list has grown from many sources and is full of duplicates you would rather not pay to verify repeatedly.
- You want verification connected to the tools you already use: Brevo, HubSpot, Salesforce, Mailchimp or PlusVibe, with clean results pushed back automatically.
- You want credits that never expire so an occasional clean does not force you into a permanent subscription.
Less suitable if
- You need a large managed data services engagement with bespoke appending, consulting and enterprise onboarding. Mailthentic is a self serve verification product with an API, not a data services agency.
- You want a report where everything comes back valid. We report what the receiving servers actually said, including the parts that are ambiguous.
Try it against a real list
Take a few hundred addresses you know something about and run them through both. Then look at what actually predicts your bounce rate: how many valids sit on catch-all domains or on Google and Microsoft infrastructure where a 250 OK proves nothing, whether every result comes with an explanation you can inspect, and how many duplicates you were charged for. Pricing and packaging change over time, so check FreshAddress's current information on their site and ours on the Mailthentic pricing page, and compare on cost per unique address.
Frequently asked questions
Is Mailthentic cheaper than FreshAddress?
Pricing and packaging change on both sides, so compare them directly: their current information is on their own site and ours is on the Mailthentic pricing page. The factor most people miss is duplicates. We deduplicate before processing and charge for unique addresses only, so the effective cost depends on how much repetition your list carries. Run a real sample and compare cost per unique address rather than headline rates.
Can I get started without talking to sales?
Yes. Mailthentic is self serve. You can create an account, upload a bulk CSV or start calling the API, and get verified results the same day. If you would rather have it inside your CRM, connect Brevo, HubSpot, Salesforce, Mailchimp or PlusVibe and run the import, verify and push cycle from there.
Why are some addresses reported as catch-all?
Because their domain accepts mail for every address, so no verifier can confirm whether one specific mailbox exists behind it. We report those honestly as catch-all or unknown, with a confidence score, so you can decide how to treat them rather than being handed a valid you cannot rely on.
How do you handle Gmail and Microsoft 365 addresses?
Openly. Both return 250 OK during an SMTP conversation even for addresses that do not exist, so a mailbox on them cannot be confirmed by SMTP alone. We still run syntax, domain and MX, disposable, role based and risk checks, and report the outcome with a confidence score and the reason attached.
Will my file come back in a usable format?
Yes. Bulk CSV exports preserve your original columns and add the verification fields alongside them, so the file drops straight back into whatever import or spreadsheet process you already use. Greylisted addresses, the 421, 450 and 451 responses, are retried with backoff first, so temporary deferrals do not turn into lost contacts.
How do you treat my data?
Mailthentic is GDPR aligned and we never sell, share or reuse your contact data. Your list is verified, returned to you, and not used for any other purpose.
