MailboxValidator is an established email verification provider with a long presence in the market, and it is a perfectly reasonable place to start. If you are reading a page like this one, you are comparing options before you commit, which is exactly the right instinct.
We are not going to make claims about their product. Their current plans are published on their own site and you should check them there. What we can do is set out, plainly, what we think you should be testing in any verifier, and then show you what Mailthentic does.
Start with what a verifier can honestly know
Email verification has a hard ceiling, and understanding it changes how you read every report you will ever see. A catch-all domain, also called accept-all, is configured to accept mail addressed to anything at that domain. When a mail server behaves that way, no verification service can confirm whether one specific mailbox behind it exists. It is not a matter of trying harder or having better infrastructure. The information simply is not available over SMTP.
The same applies to two of the biggest mailbox providers on the planet. Gmail and Google Workspace, along with Outlook and Microsoft 365, return 250 OK for addresses that do not exist. A positive SMTP response from those providers is not proof of a mailbox.
What Mailthentic does with that reality
We report it. Catch-all and ambiguous addresses come back labelled catch-all or unknown, with a confidence score, rather than being quietly converted into a "valid" that flatters our own accuracy figures. Where we cannot prove a mailbox, we tell you so and we tell you why.
Every row we return carries its status, the reason behind that status, the raw SMTP response code we received from the receiving server, and a confidence score. That means a result is auditable. You can look at an individual address, see the 550 or the 250 or the 451, and understand the verdict instead of taking it on faith.
The detection stack runs syntax validation, domain and MX record checks, disposable domain detection, catch-all detection, role based flagging for addresses such as info@ and admin@, and risky and invalid classification. Greylisting is treated properly: a 421, 450 or 451 is a temporary deferral, so we retry with a backoff instead of discarding a good contact.
Practically, there is a full API and bulk CSV upload with your original columns preserved on export, CRM integrations for Brevo, HubSpot, Salesforce, Mailchimp and PlusVibe, and no charge for duplicates, because we deduplicate before processing. Data handling is GDPR aligned and we never sell, share or reuse your contacts.

Run the comparison yourself
Take a real sample, a few hundred addresses you know something about, and put it through both services. Then ignore the headline accuracy number entirely and ask better questions. How many of the addresses marked valid are actually sitting on catch-all domains or on Google and Microsoft infrastructure where a 250 proves nothing? How many results can you actually explain to a colleague? And how many duplicates were you billed for? Is Mailthentic cheaper than MailboxValidator?
Both providers change pricing over time, so the only honest answer is to look at both directly: their plans are on their own pricing page, ours are on the Mailthentic pricing page. One factor that is easy to overlook is duplicates. We deduplicate your list before processing and charge for unique addresses only, so your effective cost depends on how clean your list already is. The messier the list, the bigger that difference tends to be.
Why will you not just tell me a catch-all address is valid?
Because it would not be true. A catch-all domain accepts mail for every address at that domain, so the accepting response tells you nothing about whether that particular mailbox exists. No verifier can resolve that from the outside. We report it as catch-all or unknown with a confidence score, so you can decide whether to send, suppress, or warm it up separately.
How does Mailthentic treat Gmail and Microsoft 365 addresses?
With honesty about the limits. Those providers return 250 OK during an SMTP conversation even for addresses that do not exist, so a mailbox on them cannot be confirmed by SMTP alone. We run the rest of our stack, syntax, domain and MX, disposable and role based checks, and return a status with a confidence score and a stated reason rather than a false certainty.
