What to look for in any verifier
Start with the ceiling on what verification can prove. A catch-all domain, sometimes called accept-all, accepts mail for every address at that domain. That means no verifier can confirm an individual mailbox sitting behind one. Gmail and Google Workspace, along with Outlook and Microsoft 365, return 250 OK during an SMTP conversation even for addresses that do not exist, so a positive response from them is not proof of a mailbox either.
Between catch-all domains and the two dominant mailbox providers, that covers a large slice of a typical B2B list. How a verifier reports those addresses is the single most revealing thing about it.
How Mailthentic reports them
Honestly. Catch-all and unconfirmable addresses come back as catch-all or unknown with a confidence score, not repackaged as valid. You get a clear line between what has been proven and what has not, which is exactly the information you need before you press send on a cold campaign.
Every row carries the status, the reason for it, the raw SMTP response code from the receiving server, and a confidence score. Nothing is a black box, and you can inspect any address in the list.
Underneath: syntax validation, domain and MX checks, disposable domain detection, catch-all detection, role based flagging for info@, admin@ and similar, plus risky and invalid classification. Greylisting is handled correctly, so a 421, 450 or 451 triggers a retry with backoff rather than a good contact being discarded as a failure.

Can you verify Gmail and Microsoft 365 prospects?
